St. Croix Animal Welfare Center - Castle Coakley
Springline / Novus Architects was contracted for design and construction-phase services for the new home of the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center. The center will provide animal welfare services to the community through the adaptive reuse/renovation of existing historic structures and new construction.
The 5.5 acre property consists of a historic Great House, a historic smaller carriage house, two sugar mills, other historical structures, and gardens. The facility will include designated and functionally designed spaces for the myriad of operational needs including:
- animal intake
- dog and puppy kennels and play spaces
- cat and kitten areas
- adoptions
- shelter medicine
- surgical facility
- humane education and outreach
- administration and staff work, break, and meeting spaces,
- and more.
The Great House will be will be provided with upgrades to create a low-cost community clinic, surgery center, and office facility. The carriage house (repurposed as an Intake Building) will be structurally hardened, provided with energy code and mechanical, electrical, plumbing infrastructure upgrades to create an Intake center. And there is also a new (7,500 SF) square foot ground up Adoptions/ Kennel building designed.
